QUOTE OF THE DAY
“The moment one gives close attention to anything, even a blade of grass, it becomes a mysterious, awesome, indescribably magnificent world in itself”
-Henry Miller
IDEA OF THE DAY
This past week, I’ve been immersed in the wild beauty of Northern Canada, visiting a dear friend and her family in the remote town of Kitimat. Nestled on the edge of wilderness, it’s a place that’s both breathtaking and humbling. Here, a morning jog isn’t just exercise—it’s an adventure. Instead of dodging potholes, you’re on the lookout for bears, moose, cougars, and the occasional rogue tree branch. It’s trail running on expert mode!
Before one such jog, my friend joked that she and her husband rarely run together because, in his words, she’s “too slow.” I countered with, “You’re not slow—you’re a mindful runner who savors the journey rather than rushing to the finish!” That earned a good laugh, and the phrase stuck. With it fresh in mind, we decided to embrace the idea fully.
As we ran, I tuned into the world around me: the pine trees lining our path and leading the way, the crisp winter air filling my lungs, the satisfying crunch of leaves beneath our feet, the melodic flow of the river beside us, and the cheerful laughter of my friend’s daughter as we made up silly songs and stories. Each step felt like an invitation to be fully present, soaking in the magic of the moment. I wasn’t just running—I was living the run.
That simple shift turned an ordinary activity into something extraordinary. It reminded me that mindfulness isn’t reserved for yoga mats or meditation cushions. It can find its way into many different aspects of daily life.
So, here’s my challenge for you: where can you insert a little mindfulness into your daily life? Whether it’s running errands, prepping dinner, or simply sharing a laugh with someone, there’s always room to slow down and savor the present. As the holiday season sweeps us into its flurry of activity, remember to carve out moments to pause, breathe deeply, and reconnect with what truly matters. You might just find a little magic hiding in the mundane.
