QUOTE OF THE DAY

“The brave may not live forever – But the cautious do not live at all”
-Richard Branson

IDEA OF THE DAY

Let’s launch right into today’s topic- being indecisive. It’s one of the top reasons people call me to get help with coaching. Being stuck. Not knowing which direction to take. Feeling fear that any choice might be the wrong one. Having debated ideas for so long, that at this point, the weight of making a decision is too great.

There are so many excuses that come along with being indecisive- and underneath it, all those feelings are trying to protect you from danger, from getting hurt, and from failing. Yet, if you stay stuck, you miss out on living. Staying safe doesn’t necessarily give you the growth to learn what you’re really made of, and how exciting and invigorating life can really be.

It is natural to have phases of feeling like something needs to change, that growth is the way forward, and that deep down inside, you know it’s time to make some hard yet needed decisions.

So, how can you tackle the fear that comes up when faced with choosing a path and committing to it?

I believe that there are two elements that can be super helpful here:

1. Be kind to yourself
2. Start Small

When confronting an inner fear, you have the choice of being your own biggest critic or cheerleader. Which version of you do you think will be more open and willing to take a risk? The one that is criticizing every little move? Or the one that is encouraging you to put yourself out there, one step at a time (and the one that is already proud of you, no matter what)? Luckily, you have the power to decide which voice you want to  tune into.

Start small. And if it’s not small enough, go smaller. When you feel stuck, sometimes your approach to getting unstuck is usually too big to tackle, and that can keep you in a state of doing nothing and ruminating (which doesn’t help).  So for something you want to move forward in, create a tiny step and then take action. Then, celebrate that little step with your inner cheerleader, and plan your next teeny step.

Soon enough, you’ll be on your way forward, moving through your tough decision, and learning so much about yourself along the way. You can do it!
