QUOTE OF THE DAY
When the “Safe” Choice Feels Like a Sacrifice
“Perhaps some detours aren’t detours at all. Perhaps they are actually the path.”
— Katherine Wolf
IDEA OF THE DAY
Lately, I’ve been noticing a theme with many of my clients.
They’re looking at the job market, the economy, their age, and their financial reality—and asking a different kind of question.
Not:
What is my dream job?
But:
- What feels safe?
- What has benefits?
- What will pay the bills?
And underneath those questions, there’s often something deeper.
Grief.
The Hidden Grief in “Being Practical”
For many people, choosing stability can feel like giving up on themselves.
Like they’re trading in their dreams for something more realistic.
But I don’t think that’s what’s actually happening.
I think there are seasons in life where the most grounded, courageous thing you can do is stop trying to force clarity—and instead focus on creating stability and breathing room.
A Season for Stability Is Still Progress
There is nothing wrong with wanting a job that feels secure.
And choosing that path doesn’t mean you’re closing the door on something bigger.
It may simply mean:
- you’re resourcing yourself
- you’re creating space
- you’re building a foundation
And foundations matter.
A Detour That Became the Path
I know this because I’ve lived it.
When I was transitioning out of my education career and trying to figure out what came next, an opportunity came my way: becoming a realtor and learning from my dad, who had been in the business for decades.
At first, I resisted it completely.
I didn’t want to sell houses.
It didn’t light me up.
It wasn’t my dream.
But despite that resistance, something in me kept moving forward.
And eventually, I said yes.
What I Couldn’t See at the Time
Looking back now, I’m incredibly grateful I did.
That experience gave me:
- skills I still use today
- confidence in myself
- a way to support myself financially
It also gave me the space to slowly build something else in the background.
My coaching business.
At the time, it felt like I was moving away from what I wanted.
But in reality, I was building toward it.
Holding Both: Stability and Possibility
Today, I get to do both.
I help people find homes they love—and I help them feel more at home within themselves.
And that dual path only exists because I was willing to take what once felt like a detour.
An Invitation
If you’re in a season where stability feels like the priority, you’re allowed to honor that.
You don’t have to turn it into a permanent decision.
You don’t have to make it mean something about what’s possible for you.
You can choose safety and stay connected to your dreams.
A Question to Reflect On
If you chose stability right now, how could you continue nurturing your dream in smaller ways?
Closing Thought
Sometimes the path doesn’t look like what you expected.
And sometimes, the thing that feels like a detour… is quietly leading you exactly where you’re meant to go.
